TV Review #2: The Fall: Series 1 Just over 20 years after that seminal series The X-Files debuted, and Gillian Anderson is still going strong in this Scandinavian-flavoured murder series. Based in Ireland, Detective Stella Gibson (Anderson) is called in to investigate a series of murders, which could be tied to one killer. Elsewhere, the killer (Jamie Dornan) juggles his murderous activities with his family life. The Fall may not be the most original things on television, but its certainly one of the most compelling, with Anderson turning in a fine performance as Gibson, a flawed detective out to catch a murderer, part-Scully, part-Luther. Its a breath of fresh air to see a woman play the hard-edged detective for once. However, Dornan, the future Christian Grey, steals the show as Paul Spector, the evil murderer/kindly grief-counsellor, with Dornan managing to come off as both icy-cold bastard and politely professional father, at the same time. Hes a good guy who just so happens to kill women. For fans of such works as Borgen, The Killing and The Bridge, The Fall is an engrossing English-language analogue, guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. VERDICT: 4/5
