TV Show Had a meeting with a notable, local filmmaker - TopicsExpress

TV Show Had a meeting with a notable, local filmmaker yesterday, set up by the father of a tennis student. It was helpful and sobering. He started out by telling me that the film industry is filled with cutthroat liars. He spoke for ten minutes about this. Said he just wanted me to know that going in. Me, ever the optimist, said, But surely there are many great people out there. In my own mind, I told myself that I would attract good people. He said he wanted to help me just by being smarter going in. Got it. Trust God and tie your camels. He asked for my two-sentence log line, otherwise known as the elevator pitch. He said, indirectly, that mine was boring. I agreed. He told me to reverse the wording and, indeed, it did sound more intriguing. Next, he said I have to make a trailer. People in the business are not going to watch your pilot. Another film-maker who is renting from me for a short while has network TV experience, and he had said the same thing to me many times. After all the effort to make the Pilot scene, another cut was the last thing in my mind, but now I realized they are both right. He looked at my Pilot along with his wife and laughed from the start then chuckled throughout. He was impressed with the quality, the edit and my performance. He told me, Youve got something here. Its funny. But I cant quite see how it turns into a TV show. This would be a great short film if you added on more to the ending. It wasnt what I wanted to hear, but I realized he had a point. In fact, my original script had an ending that wrapped it up in more like a short film. We tossed it out and went for a cliffhanger. It works okay. He showed me the trailer for his last film which has gotten distribution around the world. Very good. Compelling, though, I will say that is not hard when you are using the standard Planet Strange entertainment of blood, fear and violence. Overall, it was a valuable meeting, though I left a little down and disoriented. He stood by the front door telling me how he really liked it. Youve got something there. as I walked to the car. Still processing it. Started thinking I should just coach more tennis. its too hard, lonely, and the odds are low. But I knew those thoughts were a reflection of my emotional state. Eric, just get yourself back in a high place, and let the Universe and synchronicity guide the process. He might be right about making a name for myself in a film festival so I have some credibility in meetings. But I am going to just take the next steps I can see. Get the music and credits done. Make a trailer. Onward with my dream within focusing on a satisfying life journey with my girl...
