In the academic year 2013-2014, 21 undergraduate students, including a number of ethnic Turks and Kurds, registered to take lessons in Circassian language and literature in the newly-opened Department. This development has generated great excitement and interest amongst the Circassian communities in Turkey. Such ground-breaking developments have been made possible thanks to the co-operation agreement between the two institutions [Düzce University and the Adigean State University], which is slated to expand to yield further important developments. This is a historic event: Circassians and non-Circassians in Turkey being taught Circassian language and literature at university by specialists from Circassia. It is a huge step in the right direction as far as preservation and development of Circassian language and literature are concerned. It is markworthy that the state universities in the three Circassian republics offer Circassian language and literature degrees, up to PhD.
