TV war back on - Sky loses Victorian and NSW rights Brad Waters - 17 Dec 2014 The racing television landscape has descended into open warfare again after Sky Racing lost the rights to broadcast NSW and Victorian meetings. NSW and Victorian meeting will only be broadcast on the industry-owned channel from Thursday after Sky Racing’s owner TABcorpand TVN were unable to complete a deal to renew Sky’s licence to show all racing from Australia’s two biggest states. Negotiations between TABcorp and TVN to broker a long-term broadcasting deal, ending the rollover of short-term deals, broke down on Wednesday to leave Sky Racing without the ability to show Sydney and Melbourne racing on its three channels. Both companies sent out press releases to explain the impasse. Tabcorp stated it put an attractive package to TVN, which has not been accepted” while TVN boss Bruce Mann accused its rival television station of being unwilling to give us fair value for our rights”. We are looking for a fair go” for our sport, in fact we were prepared to take less than what we currently receive today. Sky were simply unwilling to give us fair value for our rights,” Mann said in a statement. Tabcorp is an extremely important partner for the racing industry, but they have repeatedly attempted to drive down the value of broadcasting rights for Australia’s two premier thoroughbred racing states – a contradictory position to world-wide media rights trends. Their strategy has resulted in the loss of the rights that underpin Tabcorp’s highly profitable and successful media division.”
