TV6 GAMECHANGER Joseph OBrien, student of Fatima College, can often be seen skateboarding at school and along Mucurapo Road. Hes not letting any of his different abilities get in his way. His determination to lead a normal life without concessions has helped him deal with any struggle. OBrien told TV6, There were pavement ramps in Woodbrook where I live but somebody decided to do over the pavement and they removed the ramp completely. When I see those things taken away, and they were barely even there, it gets me frustrated; the lack of thinking. I had to leave my wheelchair. So, one day I took up my wheelchair, on which I used to practise balancing, and I said, Why not? Lets go. An inspiration to many, Joseph added, You cantt feel sorry and hate yourself. I did that for a second. When I was in primary school and the teachers said if youre happy and you know it, clap your hands, I was like Well, word, Im still happy! OBrien added, I know that people are not sure how to engage with me but I dont feel insulted because if I were in their place, I wouldnt know what to do either. He said, People need to understand the perspective of another person to make sure that everybody gets equal treatment, everybody has fair ground, everybody has the same opportunities. Currently studying Spanish, French and Computer Science, he says: I want to start my own business. I want to be able to rely on myself. I want to be self-sufficient. I dont want anybody to tell me that I have to do this or that. I want to be able to have the option to choose. Joseph OBrien was featured as a TV6 GameChanger.
