TW Domestic Violence: We need to stop lecturing and questioning the victim who stays with an abusive partner. Abusers do not like to be left, and the danger of murder, revenge rape, threats to her family and children increases immeasurably when a woman decides to leave an abusive relationship. The term ‘just leave’ gets thrown around all the time, and lazily ignores the complexities of the relationship and places responsibility to fix the situation at the feet of the victim, allowing the abuser to shift blame, while simultaneously returning to his favourite place - at the centre of her attention. The abuser always has allies to remind the victim that she carries some of the blame - something she will be constantly told by her abusive partner. In a public case like this, we can all become allies of the abuser by reinforcing the his attitude to the victim. It is easier to believe that a woman “provoked” catastrophic violence from a supposedly otherwise peaceful man than it is to come to terms with the fact that a well-liked public figure is abusive. It is easier to conceive Palmer as an accomplice in her own beating than it is to realize that almost half of black women killed by their partners were killed as they tried to leave. theguardian/commentisfree/2014/sep/08/ray-rice-domestic-violence-video-janay-palmer-victim-blaming
