TWICE AS RACY AS SINGAM - #SINGAM2 It’s not often that we see a director-cinematographer team staying together for over a decade. That is what makes the partnership between director Hari and Priyan a special one. Priyan has worked on all but one of Hari’s films and he says that their mutual understanding is what makes their association click. “He is more like a family friend. When he narrates a scene, I can instinctively understand what sort of shot divisions he has in mind. And, I can keep up with his extremely fast working style,” he explains. Priyan says that their latest effort, Singam II, is twice as racy as the original and so, he has used many high speed shots. “There are a couple of chase sequences and we have used choppers, flight cam and wise cam (which can shoot 1000 frames per second) to capture the action,” he reveals. The cinematographer has also shot 30 to 40 per cent of the film in digital. Part of the film is set in Africa and Priyan says that he worked with Hari to give a variation in the tonal quality between the scenes in India and Africa. “My visual reference for this segment was City Of God,” he says. The songs in the first film were chartbusters, but the cinematographer says the team was concentrating more on the plot this time. “Two songs are actually montages. But we have made the other three stand out,” he assures and adds that even if you weren’t impressed on hearing the audio, you’ll fall in love with them after seeing the visuals.
