TWO CHINESE NABBED FOR CORRUPTION THE Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested two Chinese nationals for corrupt practices involving K5, 200. The duo has been charged and arrested separately for corruption contrary to Section 19(1) and 19(2) as read with section 41 of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 3 of 2012. In the first matter, Wenjun Zhao, 27, an engineer for Sinozocha Resource Investments in Mufumbwe District, has been arrested and charged with one count of corrupt practices with a public officer. Details are that on July 10, this year, Wenjun corruptly gave K200 cash gratification to Ronald Mulenga, an officer of Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) as an inducement for Mr Mulenga to free Mutanda Wisamba, a driver at his Sinozocha Investments. Mr Mulenga had earlier apprehended Mutanda Wisamba for transporting nine by 20 litres of diesel in a light canter truck, registration number ALF 1126 without a licence for transporting dangerous goods. In the second matter, Liu Aoran, 25, a business executive of Chipata District, has been arrested and charged with one count of corrupt practices with a public officer. Details are that between November 25 and 29, this year, Liu corruptly gave K5, 000 cash gratification as an inducement or reward to Ian Chimbwali, an officer of the Drug Enforcement Commission in order for him to release a Volvo truck, registration number ALH 3578 and trailer registration number ALE 5176. The inducement was allegedly for Mr Chimbwali to release the truck carrying Mukula logs which are forbidden for export, and allow it to cross into Malawi through Mwami border for onward exportation to China. ACC public relations manager Timothy Moono said in a statement that Wenjun and Liu were released on bond and would appear in court on December 9, and December 17, 2013, respectively.
