TWO new deals involving ports and inland terminals highlight the importance of inland connections to Europe’s box ports. The first deal sees the inland container terminal of Interporto Bologna become the first Italian player to join the Port of Rotterdam’s InlandLinks, an online site that presents intermodal terminals offering services to Rotterdam with comparable criteria to help logistics staff select services. Interporto Bologna, connected to Rotterdam with a four-times-a-week shuttle service, is the 40th terminal to sign up to InlandLinks, bringing with it an annual capacity of 300,000 teu. Meanwhile, in a separate agreement, the Port of Antwerp has extended its memorandum of understanding with Duisburg inland container terminal. The partners will work more closely to develop rail and barge transport between the two ports and their regional hinterlands. That means working together to expand the number and frequency of services on offer, launching new investment and extending a rail connection from Duisburg to Vienna to Antwerp. “Together, we intend to commit ourselves to intermodal rail freight transport in particular and to develop the Antwerp-Duisburg axis as one of the most important logistic corridors in Europe,” said Port of Antwerp chairman Marc van Peel. “In this respect, Antwerp will also actively co-operate on further developing the Vienna-Duisburg-Antwerp shuttle, Vienna being an important gate to the central and east European rail markets.”
