TWOTD. Sunday, March 23th, 2014. SCALAWAG. There’s a few SCALAWAGS in the jail where I work and today one of the miscreants told me to do some things that I think are anatomically impossible. Although normally reserved to describe scoundrels like that, it’s the converse usage of SCALAWAG that I am drawn to. My kids and I love the way Robin Williams scrunches up his face and says “…you ‘ole SCALAWAG” in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire. Indeed, if you park an “ole” in front of SCALAWAG it immediately morphs from an evil wretch into an endearing ornery person with a lively “spirit.” I hope to merit the “ole SCALAWAG” distinction as it preserves a small measure of honor while allowing for a slight streak of misbehavior.
