Each participant symbolizes “a dark and painful year under Chinese rule.” The eldest and youngest marchers are 72 and 21 year-old respectively. The march, TYC says, aims to highlight the current crisis inside Tibet, support the demands and aspirations of the Tibetan self-immolators, and to show solidarity with Tibetans inside Tibet. Tenzing Jigme, President of Tibetan Youth Congress said, “By keeping His Holiness on our head and Tibetan people in our heart, we carry out this campaign. This campaign is not the first and it will neither be the last.” “Until the crisis inside Tibet is resolved, until HIs Holiness the Dalai Lama returns back to Tibet and until the aspirations of Tibetans inside Tibet are fulfilled, we must continue to work in unity.” 126 Tibetans have set themselves on fire in Tibet since 2009 to protest against the China’s occupation of Tibet and its hard-line policies. Phayul Photo/Kunsang Gashon “Since the People’s Republic of China’s occupation of Tibet in 1949, the Communist Party has enforced a series of campaigns and policies to systematically destroy and stifle Tibetan culture, language, identity and spiritual traditions. Tibet today faces life-and-death struggle,” said the Youth group. Sandesh Mishra, General Secretary of Indo-Tibetan Friendship, Nagpur is the only Indian marching with the group. Mishra has been involved in the movement since 1996 and have taken part in 4 marches for Tibet in the past. “I believe that Tibet’s freedom is India’s security and so far 126 Tibetans have set themselves on fire calling for return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama or to protest against the environmental destruction and migration of Chinese in Tibet. So China should take the blame and address all these issues,” said Mishra. Following the Uprising March, the youth group will present a memorandum outlining five demands to the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi and submit appeals to the United Nations and embassies of other nations. The Five demands include the release of all Tibetans political prisoners, allowing international media in Tibet and addressing the aspirations of Tibetan self-immolators positively. On March 10, 1959, Tibetans in the capital city of Lhasa rose up against the Chinese occupying forces, leading to the death of thousands of Tibetans and the eventual escape of the Dalai Lama into exile. Each year, Tibetans observe the day as the National Uprising Day all over the world.
