TYPHOON WARNING FOR RIAT A 6 Squadron Typhoon has departed its new Lossiemouth home on route to this year’s Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT). The presence of 6 Squadron at RIAT 2014 is particularly welcome as the Squadron has recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, formally commemorated by a set of special markings being applied to one of its aircraft. Consisting of desert camouflage along its tail and spine, the scheme pays homage to one of the Squadrons finest hours destroying tanks with the Hawker Hurricane Mk.IID over the North African Desert during 1942-43. Such exploits led to the nickname they retain today - The Flying Can Openers. Number 6 Squadron became the first Typhoon fighter squadron to be based in Scotland when it officially stood up at Royal Air Force Leuchars in September 2010. 6 Squadron took over responsibility for providing the northern element of the Quick Reaction Alert force in March 2011, providing aircraft and crews on high alert to scramble and intercept unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace. The Squadron continues its support to Quick Reaction Alert this summer, when Quick Reaction Alert (Interceptor) North formally stands up at RAF Lossiemouth prior to 1 (Fighter) Squadron’s arrival in September.
