Ta-Nehisi Coates gets this just about right. my question: what are we going to do to change or are we doomed to play this (silly and deadly) game over and over and over again? i dont have a complete answer--i have been thinking on it, in a very serious way, for many years--when sean bell was killed, i was teaching an intermediate algebra class at MEC...some of the then (very young) students Yomika Patton, Delchaune Bommie Lovell,... were very disturbed by the event, and as we talked in class about this, something changed deeply for me too, i recognized how profoundly powerful and traumatic these events are for our young people-they make clear the powerlessness of our parents and community leaders and, most important, they introduce us to/ remind us of a latent, random, uber terror and it unbalances us and in many ways it stifles our sense of self and self expression...this is reflected in Obamas tepid remarks. wry smile. lets keep going. ( i have kept the tv off in my house for a few days-do the same-dont let your young children watch this stuff)
