Tackling Injustice: a gr8 event this Saturday at UCD School of Justice - with 3 participants from the Immigrant Council of Ireland. UCD School of Social Justice Graduate Conference October 4th 2014 Challenging Injustice in Ireland: learning from the past, actions for the future‘ The School of Social Justice conference, ‘Challenging Injustice in Ireland: learning from the past, actions for the future‘ is taking place on Saturday the 4th of October in UCD from 10:00 to 16:30 at the Fitzgerald Chamber, Student Union Centre. This initiative of the graduate students of the school has an overall ambition to take stock of the role of research and activism in achieving social justice in Ireland over recent decades, and to point the way to future challenges and opportunities to create a more socially just and egalitarian Ireland. In the run up to the 25th anniversary of Equality Studies and Women’s Studies in UCD (and the 10th anniversary of the formation of the School of Social Justice) this conference is being organised to bring together a broad range of people and organisations working against injustice through their research and activism. We are delighted to welcome the following speakers at the event: Mr Aodhán Ó’Ríordáin TD, Minister of State for Equality, New Communities and Culture Professor Colin Scott, the Principal of the College of Human Sciences Mr Vincent Browne, Broadcaster and Journalist Cathleen O’Neill, Education Coordinator, SAOL Professor Peadar Kirby, Professor Emeritus Public Policy and International Relations, University of Limerick Professor John Baker, Professor Emeritus, School of Social Justice, University College Dublin Professor Kathleen Lynch, Chair of Equality Studies, School of Social Justice, University College Dublin The conference will feature papers from 43 presenters across a diverse range of disciplines and topics. The themes include papers on gendered and class-based inequalities, equality issues for young people, migrants, ethnic and other minorities; physical and mental health issues, inequality in and through education, issues of social justice in psychology the law and politics; some presenters are also taking a historical look at social justice issues in Ireland. There will be a display of 7 practice stands from NGO’s including a photo exhibition. This conference is an excellent opportunity to be inspired by short papers on burning issues and full presentations based on research from people who are working for greater social justice in Ireland and other parts of the world. There will be a focus on how social change happens and attendees with be encouraged to debate how best to challenge growing levels of inequality in Ireland since the financial crisis. ***REGISTER NOW***
