Tackling the exorbitant cost of childcare must be a priority for the new Minister for Children. Ireland now has the second highest childcare costs in the OECD. Childcare costs account for 29% of net income for a couple and almost 50% of net income for lone parents. Its left many working parents in an impossible position. This issue has been ignored by the Government, despite extensive proposals put forward by FF to reform the sector and bring costs for families under control. The new Minister Charlie Flanagan must ensure that rising childcare costs are brought under control.
