Tadashi Tutoring Trivia 3/14/14 Today is National Pi Day and Albert Einsteins birthday (1879). Pi is a special mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circles circumference to its radius. It is often approximated by 3.14 which is why March 14 is Pi Day. Pi Day has been observed since 1988 and was officially supported by the House of Representatives in 2009. Pi day can be celebrated by throwing and eating pies. Some schools host competitions to see which students can recite the most digits of Pi. MIT often mails their decision letters on Pi Day (3/14) at Tau Time (6:28pm). Pi is an irrational, transcendental number which means that its decimal representation never ends or repeats. Computer have computed its value to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Akira Haraguchi is a Japanese engineer who holds the world record for most memorized digits of Pi. He has memorized and recited 100,000 digits of Pi in 16 hours, starting at 9am on October 3, 2006 and stopped at 1:28am on October 4, 2006.
