Tails from the Backseat You know how you always see before and after pictures in magazines and say no way? Well this IS real. As Good as Gold has been very fortunate to be a part of Benjamin and Jamies rescue. Benjamin and Jamie were found abandoned and starving on the streets of Puerto Rico. They both had severe skin and weight issues. Jamie weighed 20 lbs with intestinal parasites and was anemic. Benjamin weighed only 15 lbs and had mange. Thanks to the efforts of the rescue team in Puerto Rico, they were rescued from the street and received much needed medical care. Good Samaritans in Puerto Rico took them into their homes to care for them, feeding them quality food and making sure they received medical care. Foster homes in Puerto Rico are very scarce, so once they were strong enough to travel their health certificates were issued, and they were ready to leave the Island. That is when As Good as Gold was contacted to see if we had any space in our foster home system to aid in their rescue. Luckily, for these boys we said yes! There was a lot of coordination for both rescue groups in order to transport the boys to the mainland. Love Puerto Rico Goldens watch the weather and work with American Airlines to arrange a safe flight to Chicagos OHare. Their volunteers prepare the travel paperwork and crates, and transport them to the San Juan airport. The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is a US Territory so the dogs can fly here just as they would fly from another state, only requiring a health certificate. As Good as Gold transporters are arranged to meet the dogs as they come through American Airlines Priority Cargo. Jamie and Benjamin came on two different flights, so we had two teams of people meeting them. Some of the transporters that welcomed the boys to Chicago were, Steve D, Sharon J, Colleen O, Kristin V and Marlene P. Once they arrive at the airport, we take them out of the crates, take them to a grassy area for much needed relief and spend a little time petting them and taking pictures. Both Jamie and Benjamin came out of their crates happy and playful looking forward to their exciting future. We clean the crates and often Steve will take the empty crates to Cargo for a return trip to the Island. The next day they are taken to As Good as Golds vets for follow up care before heading off to their foster homes. Once they were in their foster home, they were neutered and Jamie had to be re-checked for his parasites and anemia. Benjamin is 2-years old and now ready for his forever home. Both boys are happy, silly and grateful to be hanging out with their new Chicago friends! There are a tremendous amount of dogs that are abandoned on the streets of Puerto Rico due to economic and social reasons. As Good as Gold is happy to partner with Love Puerto Rico Goldens to rescue goldens and golden mixes in need on the island. They fly to Chicago when we have available foster families that open up their homes to give these dogs a chance for a loving forever home. Since there are many dogs on the Island that are starving on the streets, and we have a waiting list of adoptive families, this partnership saves lives.
