Taiwan eel shipments to Japan at peak People in Japan eat grilled eel to beat the summer heat. And suppliers are having trouble keeping up with demand. Taiwanese producers rank 2nd after China in supplying eel to Japan. Shipments peak around this time of year. Workers at a facility in northern Taiwan have been busy packing eels raised on farms around the island. They box the live eels in ice water and ship them by air. But Taiwanese farmers say theyre catching fewer young eels to supply their farms. Eel shipments to Japan in the first 6 months of this year tumbled about 40 percent from the same period last year. And concerns are mounting worldwide about shrinking stocks of the Japanese eel. The International Union for Conservation of Nature last month classified the species as endangered.
