Take Advantage Of The Recent Rains! In Orofino it has been an extremely dry year. Even the 2 to 3 inches of rain we just received is not enough water to catch us up. Let me explain. In dry soil one inch of water will penetrate about 4 to 5 inches down into our clay/loam soil. Water does not move down through the soil until each soil particle has its fill of water. After each particle has its quota, the additional water is free to move on to the next particle. For example, if your lawn was completely dried out by the time of a rain, it would take 10 inches of rain before it became wet to the depth of 3 feet. We usually rely on spring rains to get our soil moist to the 3 feet level. Water is then lost from the soil by evaporation and transpiration. That is why we water about 1 inch a week and up to 2 inches a week in the hot summer months. This replaces the water that is lost through evaporation and transpiration while maintaining our 3 feet of moist soil. So keep watering as if it has not rained.
