Take Care of Your Heart Heart diseases are on the rise in India and the situation is quite worrying. One reason of heart trouble in the country hints at genes. The tendency to develop heart related problems, generation after generation, is possessed by genes. Besides this, the modern world’s stressful lifestyle and unhealthy diet are the other two equally effective and damaging reasons for causing heart diseases. The occurrence of heart disease in the country has increased drastically over the past three decades. Nowadays, more women are seen suffering from heart ailments. Nature’s good thing is that female folks are usually safe until the age of fifty years. And it is only after that their system weakens and suddenly they become more prone than men to catch heart troubles. But now it is shocking to find that women below the age of fifty years are becoming heart patients requiring treatment by surgery too. Women are facing more stress now and this reason cannot be ruled out. Regular poor diet and smoking are causing heart attacks to a good number Indians every year. It is surprising and saddening that younger people too are becoming victims. People are fighting against ever-rising price index and at the same time tackling the diminishing power of Indian rupee. They are thriving too much and consequently getting engulfed with continuous stress. Heart disease is on a sharp rise in all Indian cities. Prevention is better than cure --- (a) make corrections and improvements in your diet chart, (b) strictly try to lead a healthy life by all means, and (c) always remember not to smoke. A significant point to worry is that we are eating less fruits and vegetables. Eating good quantities of fruit and vegetables has multiple benefits. They contain a lot of fibre and you get a satisfactory feeling that your stomach is full. And thus there are little chances of eating wrong food or junk food. Stop eating oily and fried food as far as possible and the result will be a good heart health. It is really good to eat raw garlic everyday. Those who eat meat they should eat it steamed or roasted and try hard to forget fried dishes of meat. Drink milk having less fat, say toned milk. We must remember that milk and meat of ruminant animals contain harmful fats and we have no other choice but to avoid them. Our body needs some fats through food. But we have to understand the good fat and the bad fat and we should be able to distinguish between them. At the same time we have to know the quantity of fat that is sufficient in our daily food schedule. Excess fat is injurious because cholesterol from this excess fat in the blood is going to deposit in the coronary arteries. And one thing to keep in mind is that no cooking oil prevents heart attacks as claimed. Only some oils are less harmful than others. Strictly avoid groundnut oil, coconut oil and processed ghee. It is good to eat small meals frequently during the day. Further, you must keep a gap of two hours after dinner and before going to bed. Make it a regular and consistent habit. This way your body will get sufficient time to digest the food before your bedtime. Remember that digestion process is extremely slow during sleep. Daily walk of one hour duration is good for health. Do not get disturbed by the unavoidable gaps of a day or two in between. Your walk speed should be good enough so that you are able to talk but not able to sing while walking. -N.C.
