Take comfort in knowing you are protected by your angels When we found out that Mackenzie had CDH and that she was going to have to fight for her life, we realized that she would need a guardian angel to watch over her. This is why we gave her the middle name Maryellen, after Erics mother, who we know has been watching over us since the beginning. We have seen many signs of her during our journey reaffirming that she is here with us and protecting our baby girl. The day that Mackenzie cycled off ECMO the machine had an inspection sticker dated 11/16, Maryellens angelversary. Today on her 19 year angelversary I went to her grave and thanked her for keeping our little girl safe and for showing us that she is with her. After my visit I came into the hospital to hear that Mackenzies doctors were planning a kamikaze extubation. We had planned for weeks of intubation but as of 2:30pm Mackenzie is off the ventilator and back on cpap. Although Mackenzies first blood gas came back terrible, we knew that Maryellen was with her on this day and that things would turn around. Her last few gasses have improved and we are very cautiously waiting out the next few days trying to see if Mackenzies body can handle breathing on her own so soon after such a big surgery. We are in a very critical time period right now as far as being reintubated is concerned. We are praying that Mackenzies body is up for this challenge and that she can remain extubated.
