Take in the little things that make everything so special. Let me explain... (This note was written prior to a flight from San Francisco to Australia) I made a conscious decision this trip to really look forward to the journey itself. Not the usual - OMG its 14 hours until we land. There are several reasons for this experiment - not the least is the chance to usually meet someone new and interesting in the seat next to you. The main things I got from this journey and all the time in the air are the following.... * To fly overnight when its a full moon and you can see the shimmer of the light on the Pacific Ocean 38,000 feet below is truly quite amazing and stunning. * To see the hue of the softest light and the many colors this brings as the sun rises in the East against the backdrop of the brightest moon I have ever seen is really something to see. * The chance to watch a couple of movies and just relax * Seeing the pure joy and excitement in peoples faces when you see their loved ones come through the gates at the terminal is really pretty cool * Seeing your own loved one when you arrive home is pretty special (Isnt that the BEST feeling?) and last but not least... * The look of glee and the shine in your childrens eyes as they yell out DADS HOME and run into your arms as they arrive home from school - well - I challenge anyone who thinks they can beat that feeling! I agree - I am very lucky to be able to experience this kind of thing - not many people get to leave their own state - let alone their country. But heres the trick... If you have ever planned a wedding or event - you can plan anything - especially a trip. And believe me - NOTHING will come close to organizing a wedding - a trip is a piece of cake in comparison. Here are the simple steps. 1. Choose the destination and date you would like to go there - it could even be in your own state 2. Get onto some of the travel websites and get pricing 3. Set a savings plan - allowing for spending money, transfers, meals, etc 4. Get a quote on travel insurance - ALWAYS get this!!!! 5. Ensure your passport is up to date - or GET ONE!!! 6. Start researching your destination to experience the most from it. 7. Start counting down the days until you experience this trip. 8. Repeat when necessary!!! Really - thats all there is to it - if you want it - go get it! Need an excuse? - choose an Anniversary, Birthday, Bucket List - whatever. You can even do this and leave the kids behind. Theyll get over it - they have their whole lives to experience this kind of thing. And if they travel with their friends when they are ready - they will have a lot more fun. Heres a thought - why dont you get your partner to save for it from their income and you continue to do what you do with the usual bills etc - this way - it is an easy thing to accomplish (trust me - this works - I am speaking from experience and it is a brilliant suggestion my wife put to me a few years back.)
