Take note. Hollins University is now offering two new programs that may be of interest. The following message is from Todd Ristau, Director of these programs at Hollins - Dear Theatre Colleague, Just wanted to let you know that the little acorn we planted in 2007 continues to grow and prosper. We are launching two new certificate training programs -- one in New Play Directing and another in New Play Performance -- as an extension of the Playwrights Lab at Hollins University. We recognized a need to teach new play collaboration techniques because excitement turns to frustration when the a first production has an emerging playwright teamed them with a director and performers inexperienced in having a playwright in rehearsal, approaching rewrites or incorporating changes into the production after rehearsals begin. Likewise, our playwrights need to learn how to collaborate with appropriate tact and respect for other disciplines. Doing new plays requires specialized skills, and the work must be done in such a way that everyone involved--including the audience--can celebrate the results. We have carefully crafted a curriculum to serve those needs for a fraction of the time and expense of a terminal degree. Certificate students have the same access to facilities, guest speakers and visiting faculty as our playwrights and in just two six-week summer sessions they will have gained practical experience, professional training, and professional contacts that will last throughout their careers. Thanks to our New Works Initiative Fund, we are able to offset the costs of producing plays by our playwrights and have underwritten productions from New York to Los Angeles. This year we received a restricted donation of $20,000 to fund productions involving students in our certificate programs. A theatre doing a show by a Hollins playwright may apply for production assistance of up to $5000 if the production involves one of our certificate students. It is our commitment to getting work done, and to building mutually beneficial creative relationships with theatres all over the country, that has resulted in more than 100 productions, 50 readings, 16 published plays, and over a dozen honors and awards by our playwrights in just the last year alone. You can see a sampling of those results online: hollins.edu/grad/playwriting/work.shtml
