Take up NE case: NESO 17 October:Drawing the attention of the union home minister Rajnath Singh to the continuing attacks on people of north east with the recent cases taking place in Bangalore and Gurgoan, the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has sent a memorandum to him asking for his intervention to stop this cycle of violence against the people of the region. NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa and secretary general Sinam Prakash Singh requested the intervention of Singh and urged him to take up the matter with the concerned state governments of Karnataka and Haryana and also take effective measures by the appropriate authorities that will give the people of north east a sense of mental, social and physical security studying and residing in Delhi and other parts of India NESO elaborated on the recent incidents in Bangalore and Gurgoan on the October 15 and 16 respectively in which T Micheal Lamjathang Haokip from Manipur was severely assaulted in Bangalore just because he does not know Kannada and Mr Awang Newmei and Mr Aloto Chishion from Nagaland were also brutally assaulted in Sikanderpur in Gurgoan. The NESO memorandum also said incidents of assaults, molestations are happening on a frequent basis resulting in a feeling of insecurity especially of the women folk. It reminded that in February this year, a huge uproar and protest took place after the barbaric murder of Nido Tania which prompted the previous central government to take reactive measures and also a form a committee under the Chairmanship of MP Bezburuah to look into the measures that the central government can adopt to prevent such unwanted incidents. NESO also lamented that although such incidents have been vehemently denounced by the government at different levels, north east communities continue to suffer shock and panic as unabated attack and assault continues against their communities. NESO also placed the following demands : 1) Setting up of Special Police Cell in all the metros which will cater specifically to cases related to racial discrimination and atrocities on the students and people from North East in line with the Delhi model, with a provision that it is manned by police officers from NE states.. 2) Capital punishment to the perpetrators of the heinous crime at the earliest. 3) Inclusion of the North East – its geographical location, its people, its culture, its ethos etc. – in the syllabus of schools under all State Boards and Central Boards including the CBSE. 4) Out of thousands of police personnel recruited from Delhi Police, the Govt. of India should make one time recruitment policy for at least 5000 Delhi police personnel in the respective capitals of 8 NE states. 5) Enactment of a stringent law to deal with such crimes against the people from North East.
