Takeaway from the morning here at BYU: Never, ever look at - TopicsExpress

Takeaway from the morning here at BYU: Never, ever look at anyone and doubt their capabilities. I had breakfast with someone this morning who looked and seemed a bit different. Little did I know what I would learn from her. She was born with cerebral palsy, and began having seizures at 8 months old. She is now a bit younger than me. She walks with a limp and talks slow. But, she is way, way beyond me in many ways. She has been indexer since 2008, and an arbitrator during part of that time. This woman astounded me with her ability to read and decipher old handwriting, and has worked on some of the most difficult of records. She is a church service missionary, and works at her assignment from 7-3 each day. She also plays the organ. Keynote speaker T.C. Christiansen (director of 17 Miracles, Ephraims Rescue), showed clips from his films and gave the background on the clips. These were films about early Mormon pioneers. There was a company of handicapped pioneers that were joined by the Martin Handcart Company. They were led by a 70-year old man. Nobody knows anything about them because nobody mentioned them in any records, and none of them kept any. Great things happen when opportunity meets preparation. My own personal observations: It is so important to mingle with the attendees and sit with them during the classes you are taking to also learn. Even though there is a hospitality/break room, there is much more excitement in the hallways and classrooms. There is hardly anyone at all in the hallways during the classes - just the vendors. This is a good sign.
