Taken down in combat during the Battle of Sunda Strait on Feb. 28, 1942, the USS Houston was recently rediscovered on the ocean floor. Nicknamed The Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast, the Houston is one of an estimated 17,000 sunken ships and aircraft resting in the ocean around the world. In June, divers along with Alexis Catsambis, an underwater archaeologist from the Naval History and Heritage Command, worked to document the remains of the storied battleship, a process that included direct observations and inspections by divers along with use of sonar sensing systems and a remotely operated vehicle.
