Taken from my, The Saluda Rive Sighting. With all of his concentration, he focuses on something close to the river. After running from the snow-filled dirt road, I hide behind a large, curly barked hickory tree. I pray I am hiding from view and then press tightly against the tree’s thick, rough bark. There I remain perfectly still, not even a flinch from me. Slowly, I look up into the enormous tree. Beside its great trunk, it towers over me, quickly pressing myself into snowdrift at it base. I then blend in like one of the old tree’s protruding knots. With eyes still fixed on Dad, as if leading a platoon, he motions for me to come to him. Before leaving my cold bed of snow, I her a loud, dreadful scream echo through the forest. This noise is so loud it shakes snow powder loose from low-hanging branches. A nippy, gusting wind blows falling power throughout the forest. Before we move again, Dad wants to see what it is. His worried eyes still scan the river bottom where he stands motionless, not even a twitch. Then, at a snail’s pace, Dad slowly lowers his hand, which means, “Do not move. James!” I try to be motionless. However, my frigid hands go deep into my pockets. I mutter to myself. “Whatever it is, I hope it’s friendly!” I stand terrified and perfectly still. “What was that Dad?” My mind is still fearful from the scream that forbids us to come any closer.
