Taking a break from the present... Today is the 76 anniversary of the great Long Island Express Hurricane of 1938. This cyclone raced up the East Coast of the USA and smashed the industrial Northeast as a strong Cat 3. Winds at landfall on Long Island, New York, are estimated to have been 105 knots (120 mph)-- and they werent much lower as the storm blasted into Connecticut. Beach towns were reduced to rubble and larger cities like New London, Connecticut, were devastated. Hundreds died. The 1938 storm remains the strongest known hurricane in this region-- the benchmark against which all others are compared. (This otherwise cool video refers to the storm as the New England Hurricane-- a misnomer which irritates New Yorkers who took the full force of this storm off the open Atlantic. :D )
