Taking care of our veterans is imperative, which is why the broken VA systems needs a serious overhaul immediately if not before. The experiences of a veteran, who happens to be a fly fishing buddy, are interesting. He is battling cancer and has a couple of other physical ailments that come from being on the planet for so long. Prior to the disclosures about the scheduling mess at the VA, I remember he spent about 2 years waiting for surgery. At the time that seemed like a long wait, but I thought not much of it. He travels to Reno for his treatment and for his medical visits. In a recent discussion, and after the mess of the VA in the news, I asked if it seemed to him they were getting it together. He wasnt sure. Prior to the press coverage at the VA, he went to Reno for his annual check up once a year and he went twice a year to see his oncologist. Now. His latest experiences make me wonder if the VA isnt cooking the books in a new way. Bottom line is that hes scheduled to be over there 10 times per year, rather than the 3 times per year as before. Reno is about 250 miles away, and thats a lot of road time. I remarked that I thought the VA was going to make it possible to go to a local facility if he had to travel more than 50 miles. He told me that the VA hasnt done that part, but in his investigations he is finding that local doctors probably wont accept patients because of low reimbursement rates. I do understand that a sample of one is too small to draw conclusions. On the other hand this all seems rather fishy to me. townhall/tipsheet/kysisson/2014/09/10/now-hiring-va-wants-to-take-care-of-vets-again-n1889968
