Taking care of your Shih Tzu puppys coat starts when they are - TopicsExpress

Taking care of your Shih Tzu puppys coat starts when they are still with their breeder, most reputable breeders start bathing, clipping nails, bum, face & paw trims when your baby is around 3-5 weeks old. The Shih Tzu along with several other coated small breeds benefit from early grooming secessions even if they only last 5 minutes a day. When you bring your new baby home you should ask your breeder for a recommended list of grooming supplies such as shampoo, conditioner, brushes & combs. If not ask a professional pet groomer what s/he recommends. Most puppies are terrified when their new mommy or daddy gives the their first bath so wait a couple days and give him a bath when he is better settled in. Make sure you put cotton balls in your Tzus ears before you bath him to prevent water from getting into the ear canal. Dont forget to remove after you have blow dried him. This is the best way to prevent painful ear infections. If you are growing a long coat its particularly important to get your dog use to being groomed on a grooming table and teach him proper table etiquette. Nothing like dealing with a unhappy puppy who is constantly fighting you. My Tzus in pet clip are bathed every 2-4weeks long coated is every 2-4 days to maintain the coat keeping it clean makes him not only feel good but who wants to smell a stinky dog. Every pet owner should know how to clip their pets nails, brush the teeth & clean the ears. Performing those basic tasks helps save on trips to vet or groomer.
