Taking our neighbor seriously “One law shall be for the native-born and for the stranger who dwells among you.” Exodus 12:49 There was a clear distinction between an Israelite and a foreigner. However, God had laid out the option for an individual outside the Israelite nation to be adopted into the nation if the foreigner submitted to the Mosaic Law. The Israelites also had instruction to be hospitable to strangers that spent time among them and to treat them with respect. It is common today for individuals to judge others according to the standards they have set for themselves. Fight this norm by instead acting in accordance with the gospel. Let’s consider a few ways this can be demonstrated: Make an effort to be respectful and invitational Be a peacemaker when you see tension in your community Be tolerant of differing views and do not force your own point of view on others Be open-minded and slow to judge when someone wishes to contribute to congregational life When were some times Jesus demonstrated the gospel through actions during His life on earth? How do you need to change your habits to align yourself with Jesus’s example?
