Taking the bitter with the sweet. Oh yes, that will get you half a second. On this day, 1951, the first nationally televised National Football League championship game was broadcast by the DuMont Network. The butt-head LA Rams beat my Cleveland Browns 24-17. I suppose you could say that a “Cleveland” team won either way since the Rams were located in Cleveland a couple years earlier. NOT. Check out the photos: The Rams photos are clearly staged with Elroy Hirsh high steppin’ it and Tom Fears laying out for a circus catch. Compare that to the photo of a real football player in the actual game, Otto Graham. Also check out his uniform number: 60. That was before numbers were assigned based on position played. Today it would be something like 7 or 12. The DuMont Network paid a whopping $75,000 for the rights. An ad in the upcoming Super Bowl XLIX will cost $4.5 million for 30 seconds. Oh, and NFL boys? -- “XLIX”? It’s time to drop that Roman numeral crap.
