On this day, 1951, the first nationally televised National Football League championship game was broadcast by the DuMont Network. The butt-head LA Rams beat my Cleveland Browns 24-17. I suppose you could say that a “Cleveland” team won either way since the Rams were located in Cleveland a couple years earlier. NOT. Today it would be something like 7 or 12. The DuMont Network paid a whopping $75,000 for the rights. An ad in the upcoming Super Bowl XLIX will cost $4.5 million for 30 seconds. Oh, and NFL boys? -- “XLIX”? It’s time to drop that Roman numeral crap.
