Tales of a Pawnbroker No. 34 I can’t believe that I forgot about this story, especially as it only happened a couple of years ago. Every now and then it’s my job to change our business’s ad in the local paper and usually the lady from the Newham Recorder comes down to the shop to discuss this with me. She’ll often stay about half an hour and we’ll chat about our respective businesses etc. It was coming up to Christmas and the lady in question was telling me about the office `dinner’ which is a big deal in the Recorder Group calendar. Anyway, she told me about the dress she bought (whoosh! Went above head) and the fact that she was disappointed with the menu as she didn’t like seafood, fish, eggs, too many sauces, etc. etc. She was a bit of a picky eater and she went on a bit about it. So, chit chat and new ad arranged she left and that was that. Christmas came and went and it was time to rearrange our advert a bit. I emailed her with my new design and asked how the Christmas `do’ went. Back came an email acknowledging my new design and a reply to my question - `It was great apart from the food. I didn’t like any of it’. I wrote back `Ah, that’s because you’re a fussy eater’ or at least I THOUGHT I did and thought nothing more of it. The months went by and as I hadn’t heard from her, I decided to email my ad lady to change to see if she wanted to come down to discuss the new ad. No reply came back. A week later, still no reply, so I decided to phone her – no reply. So, I went to send another email. It was then while looking at the previous emails that I noticed a possible reason why she’d not been in contact. When I accused her of being a fussy eater I actually inexplicably mis-spelt `fussy’ instead spelling it with a `p’ instead of an `f’. Oh dear. I think I may have caused some offence. I never spoke to her again as she left the newspaper soon after. Ooops.
