Talked w Dr., she said she will have her people check on getting him into ECM monday and transition to there tues or Wednesday. They have a palliative care floor that works w hospice. She said if he meets criteria for inpatient hospice his BCBS should cover it under hospice benefits. If not, we have decided, due to the fact that insurances dont pay for nursing homes for that typically which is very expensive and they are not a peaceful environment and very cramped space for mom to visit, that the next option would be to have him set up at grandmas house w me & w hospice coming there. The layout and the spare room for mom would be good and she cant handle the emotional aspect of him passing at their house. The doctor discussed what meds they will have him on to keep h comfotable. Due to his stomach being upset recently he has been taken off artificial nutrients (feeding). The hard decision has been made to continue with that path and not give it to him. The Dr. Said his brain with its problems and fluid may be telling his stomach to not process it anyway and in the process of not prolonging his suffering she suggested it. She said they will keep him calm with adavan and comfortable with morphine. She said as a guess, she would estimate the length to 3-4 weeks on the long end of possibility. If the fluid worsened causing pressure etc. It could be much shorter and sudden and his brain could even tell his lungs to stop working at some point. Any of that could be sooner just depending. So hard because it seems so wrong to think of choosing to not feed him like that. She assured us he would not feel like he was starving which was a big concern. She said most patients that are able to communicate tell them they lose appetite and dont want food but just to keep their mouths moist with the dental sponge and chapstick etc. I gave mom alone time with him earlier so she could talk to him :( just heartbreaking.
