Talkshow Host Skip E. Lowe Dies at 85. I interviewed Skip for the Weird Hollywood book, and in turn, he interviewed me for his television show. While he started out as a child actor, Skip had found his calling interviewing Bette Davis, Orson Welles, Tony Curtis, and much of Hollywood’s old guard, so its fair to say I was more than a little thrilled to receive the invitation to appear on his cable access TV show. The interview itself was a surreal experience Ill never forget. I wound up hanging out with Skip from time to time, usually lending him a few bucks for lottery tickets - but it was a small price to pay to spend hours with this icon. Many know Skip was Martin Short’s inspiration for his Jiminy Glick character. I would mention Martin Short to Skip now and then just to listen to his reaction. It was like watching Jiminy Glick get offended that you told him he reminded you of Jiminy Glick. It’s fair to say I developed a bit of a friendship with the man for a brief few months. Id go watch him host his live music karaoke shows in Beverly Hills. In the audience you might see Jackie Stallone, Sally Kellerman, or one of Johnny Carsons ex-wives. He’d often need a ride back to his place, and I was happy to drive him. From the passenger’s seat Skip would name-drop and gossip about Hollywood stories – swearing me to a secrecy that I doubt he really cared if I honored. It was more of a formality, because he just enjoyed spreading a little scandal - even if it was decades old. While I can’t remember why now, Skip was in my mind earlier this week. It had been a couple of years since we spoke, and I thought about calling just to say hello, and ask him how he was doing. He wouldn’t have remembered me right away, but I’d have mentioned the Weird Hollywood book, and he would have recalled. Skip was an odd fellow, and I don’t mean that in a negative way. I really like him, and I’m sorry to see him go, but honored to have spent time with this only-in-Hollywood figure. R.I.P. Skip E.
