Tamiko her daughter Mari, and I boarded a bus for Wonder Lake at 6:45. It had been raining most all of the day before. They say colder and overcast weather are conditions which make it more likely to see the animals in the park, but it’s always hit or miss. One bus can see more than the next passing by just a little while later. Maria has yet to see a moose and didn’t again yesterday, which is surprising. When we reached the 66 mile point (Eielson) we found out there had been a major rock slide and washout preventing any buses from going further. It had rained 2.2 inches, almost 1/6 the annual rain fall. One of the resorts at the end of the road in Kantishna had flooded. Water was up several feet on the buildings, their generator was damaged and people had to be flown out by helicopter. After a short break, our bus turned around and headed back. On the home bound journey, we were able to get a better view of a herd of caribou closer to the road that was seen earlier in the trip, and another huge herd of almost two hundred or more. Some of the passengers also caught a glimpse of a fox. The weather started to clear up as we were traveling back so decided to try to get in a hike at Mount Margaret. The trail was a too wet and thick with willows so our plans changed again. After getting back to the park entrance we drove up to take in the view at The Grand Lodge, overlooking the resorts in the canyon. These road signs are posted on the way up. Love the mosquito sign and some ones good effort at public humor. By the way, the mosquitoes are not as bad as they have been. https://plus.google/photos/102834994215679768101/albums/6029774138813818401?banner=pwa
