Tamils for Obama wrote a letter to Indias PM Modi explaining why they felt that CM Jayalalithaa of Tamil Nadu might be the victim of a malicious prosecution, and why they hoped Modis government would review the case. Chennai, India (PRWEB) September 30, 2014 Jayalalithaa is probably the best and most popular politician in India, said the press spokesman for Tamils for Obama. We love her, and we are worried that her recent *conviction for corruption may have had more to do with her political success than with anything she did or didnt do. In a **letter to Indias Prime Minister Modi the diaspora Tamil group expressed their hope that the Indian government would review the legal proceedings involved in this prosecution. This conviction may be the result of a malicious prosecution, said the Tamil spokesman. It might be proper, but we hope that the Indian national government will look into it. Three things jump out at us when we look at Jayalalithaas legal problems, the Tamils said in their letter. The three concerns were: 1. The prosecution was moved to Karnataka, which is hostile to Tamil Nadu politicians generally and to Jayalalithaa particularly. This comes from the long-running ***Cauvery river water dispute . Jayalalithaa won the most recent round of that quarrel, which left the political class in Karnataka angry and resentful. We think that this hostility contributed to an unfair and biased political atmosphere that made a fair trial impossible. 2. Jayalalithaa has been ****a thorn in the paw of the Congress party for years . She spoke out loudly and with determination on Sri Lankan Tamil issues, on Tamil Nadu fishermen, and numerous other matters that voters in Tamil Nadu watched closely. This was painful to the Congress party government, and we think that they have probably been seeking a pretext to diminish her for a long time. Congresss desire for vengeance (at a time when Congress controlled both the national government and the state of Karnataka) probably made a proper prosecution even harder to achieve. 3. Karunanidhi, president of DMK, has been an active and highly ambitious political figure in Tamil Nadu for almost six decades. Jayalalithaa has been his *****rival and personal nemesis for years. We think he probably had a hand in bringing the case against Jayalalithaa. This mixes personal hatred with democratic politics, and the mix may be poisonous. At the end of their letter the Tamils said to Modi We hope that your government will use its justice department to review the case brought against Jayalalithaa and make sure that this prosecution was conducted ethically and legally. Tamils for Obama is a politically active group of Tamil Americans. They believe that over 70,000 Tamil civilians were massacred during the last weeks of the Sri Lankan ethnic war. They have also watched the behavior of the Sri Lankan Sinhalese victors after the war, and strongly conclude that Tamils in Sri Lanka will only be safe when this unfortunate island is divided into two states.
