Tanzania has most cervical cancer cases in East Africa Tanzania has the highest reported number of cervical cancer cases in Eastern Africa and some of the very highest in the World, a press statement issued early this week by Marie Stopes Tanzania (MST) has discerned. All Marie Stopes health facilities are providing screening and treatment services free of charge to all women who need these services because: “It is very important for women to come for screening as early as possible to prevent themselves from developing further complications as the cancer reaches the later stage,” the Marie Stopes statement says. Women in the country are thus reminded that early detection is the best approach to fighting cancer and with readily available free screening across the country, women are advised to perform regular check ups and screening. Using an age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) Tanzania was found to have 50.9 cases per 100,000 women and using an age-standardized mortality rate it had 37.5 per 100,000 women. One-tenth of the estimated 72 000 new cases and 56 000 cervical cancer deaths in Sub-Saharan African countries reported since the year 2000 occurred in Tanzania.
