Taraf de Haidouks are the world’s most celebrated Gypsy string band whose wild, elemental music has entranced everyone from Johnny Depp to Yehudi Menuhin and the Kronos Quartet. Hailing from the village of Clejani in the Romanian countryside where they were ‘discovered’ in 1990, the 12-piece mini-orchestra (fiddles, accordions, clarinet, vocals and more) has gone on to become perhaps the greatest world music attraction of them all, whose line-up now includes a second generation of young musicians alongside the original elders. Featuring intensely rhythmic Balkan/Turkish dance-tunes with roots in antiquity, a live performance by Taraf de Haidouks is one of the experiences of a lifetime. Six years ago they launched our landmark Migrations series with a night of such sustained, delirious excitement that it seemed more dream than reality.
