Target: Ventura County District Attorney Gregory D. Totten Goal: Prosecute the owner of a Simi Valley ranch for severely neglecting horses, resulting in two deaths In a Californian ranch twelve horses were found to be in critical condition, malnourished and emaciated, and a few suffering from injuries such as open wounds. Two skeletal horse carcasses were are found nearby; one was believed to be an ex-racehorse who died from a shattered leg, while the other was a mare who slipped between rocks and died with her foal nearby. Both were surely incredibly painful deaths. The horses were fed only three times a week, even though they should be eating fourteen times a week. To make matters worse, some of the horses could not even eat the little food that they were given because their continually-growing teeth were not filed down. Not only could they not eat, but their sharp teeth had caused painful injuries in their mouths. It is thought that these horses may have been under this neglect for up to eight months. Five of the horses have been relocated, and the others remain at the Simi Valley ranch while new homes are being searched for them. However, the ranch owner has not been charged with anything yet, as the Humane Society of Ventura County is still investigating him.
