Task: Children on the soil This week housemates were introduced to the world of food and produce from farm to the kitchen. Living in a continent rich with its own minerals but still stuck in a cross-boarder cycle of poverty and lack it is important for the people of Africa to understand that there was an agricultural crisis that was wreaking havoc with many African economies. In this task Biggie challenged housemates to lend their voices and the Hotshots platform to this plight spurred on by the folks from the One Campaign. Earlier in the week housemates were given the task of preparing their own “Do Agric” presentation in which they were to outlined the various prospects and opportunities within agriculture in Africa. In keeping with revolutionary notion of changing the image of the agricultural sector so that it can better appeal to the youth of Africa it was important for housemates to speak to lucrative potential and influence that agriculture can generate. It was just a matter of educating one another and speaking truth to power. Housemates were thus called one-by-one into the diary session to make a plea’s to the leaders and citizenry of their respective home countries. They each pled their case to their leaders with the utmost passion married with reverence. They petitioned to their leaders to keep the promise they made to grow and support African agriculture as well as send a plea to fellow countrymen to practice growing their own food and promote the country’s agricultural plans in their homes. Nhlanhla posed the tough question to his fellow South Africans; what are you doing? Are you accountable? He concluded by asking leaders and citizens to get up and act today for change. In three minutes Sheillah and Goitse were able to reach Botswana by making reference to their strong currency and capitalising on that. Idris revealed that Tanzania is a country that lives off of their agricultural output so it was most important to preserve the industry while Ellah presented her case for Ugandans to serve their budding economy by making the right choices agriculturally. All housemates got to have their say and, as Macky2 pointed out, lend their voices to the cause and champion agriculture alongside the One Campaign.
