Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby MEDIA RELEASE: 27 September 2013 Respectful Schools Funding Model The Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby has today provided feedback to the Education Minister Nick McKim on the Respectful Schools funding model for the 2014 school year. The Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby cannot endorse the proposed Respectful Schools Model in its current form. Closing the IQ gap is an important reform however the proposed model will also remove valuable high and additional needs funding from schools budgets which in our opinion will leave students with an IQ above 70 living with disability worse off. Access to a quality education is the right of all children living with disability and we believe that this new model will effectively take money from one group of students and reallocate it to another group of students – robbing Peter to pay Paul. Closing the IQ gap between Tasmania and the mainland on the one hand but decreasing the level of support available for students who have an IQ above 70 on the other. The Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby believes that the Government needs to increase the new money being made available to support students with an IQ between 55 & 70 living with disability without taking away the high and additional needs funding available in a schools budget. The Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby continues to call on the Minister for Education Nick McKim to initiate a complete review of the Disability Education Support System in Tasmanian schools to ensure that all students living with disability in our schools receive the support they require to gain quality educational outcomes. Mrs Desmond said: “We believe more discussion is required in order to come up with a funding model that not only closes the IQ gap but also ensures that no student living with disability will be worse off in the 2014 school year.” For Further Information contact Kristen Desmond on 0448 037 064
