Tata’s relief work in Uttarakhand: - The disaster that has struck Uttarakhand has been so huge that large areas of the state are still unreachable. The rains continue to beat down heavily, adding to the challenge of relief work in this mountainous region. The severity of the damage became evident only after the relief teams arrived on the spot. The villages can be reached only after a trek which involves crossing several areas affected by landslides. Mules and donkeys cannot traverse this region. Although the villagers are not starving, there is a critical need for lighting and shelter. Tata Relief Committee (TRC) has been stepping up efforts to reach more and more affected areas. Food packets are being air dropped in Uttarkashi, thanks to a helicopter made available by Tata Steel. The teams led by Bachendri Pal have returned from their visit to three severely affected villages and their assessment showed that approximately 7-8 hectares of agricultural land, besides houses, the Panchayat Bhavan and a connecting bridge, have been washed away. Nearly 200 households in three villages close to Didsari, have also been badly affected. The TRC relief team has been asked to supply items like sugar, oil, tea, matchboxes, candles, salt, etc. Some of the team members will survey Rudraprayag and other villages in the area tomorrow, before moving any more material in that direction. A demand for food has arrived from the Pindar valley, where the Seema Suraksha Bal and Sankalp, a local NGO, have agreed to take over the packages and transport them to 11 villages, with 401 households, all above a height of 3,000m, which have been entirely cut off from the main area. TISS efforts Teams from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, along with members of local NGOs, will visit the districts of Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh to assess the current status of lands, with reference to agriculture and horticulture. An agri roll-out will be planned after the assessment. This will enable people in the region to resume their normal livelihood. Tata companies reach out to help A number of Tata companies have stepped in to provide support and assistance in keeping with their areas of expertise. Many have started collecting a day’s salary from their employees, which will be matched by the company’s contribution and donated for relief activities. Indian Hotels Indian Hotels has finalised plans to lend support to the ongoing relief operations organised by TRC. Posters, cards and letters have been placed in guest rooms and displayed at help desks outside Taj restaurants to encourage and enable guests to donate towards defraying the cost of sending blankets, sweaters, solar lamps and canned food items to Uttarakhand. The Taj has also expressed its readiness to set up its kitchens at key points in the affected areas. Hotel staff will prepare fresh food which can be transported wherever required. The hotel will run these mobile kitchens for a period of 1-2 months. The hotel will also offer hospitality-based skill training to the affected. Individuals will be taken in batches to the company’s skill training centres in Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata to attend three-month residential courses. About 200 people can receive such training. Tata Power Delhi Distribution AK Johri, MD, Uttaranchal Power Corporation (UPCL), has requested Tata Power Delhi Distribution to depute its engineers and workers for taking up restoration work of 33KV and 11KV lines at locations in Uttarkashi and Ukhimath in Rudraprayag district, and Joshimath and Narain Bagar in the district of Chamoli. UPCL has put in a request for teams of five people (including one engineer and four workers) at each location to carry out conductor stringing work, pole erection, etc for the restoration of these lines. Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Many employees of Tata Steel Processing and Distribution, Pantnagar, have expressed their willingness to work as volunteers. Employees at the company’s plant at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, made a collection and bought items like puffed rice, grams, tetra packs of juice, towels, dhotis, etc with the proceeds. These items were given to those affected in Rishikesh. Tata Chemicals Tata Chemicals has offered to send in its agriculture and horticulture experts to assess the damage with reference to land. The company has also put together a list of volunteers who are on standby.
