Tax deductions are a form of soft coercion by the government in - TopicsExpress

Tax deductions are a form of soft coercion by the government in order to encourage and discourage behaviors through incentives. When, to what extent, for what reasons, or in what specific cases do you find this practice to be morally legitimate or illegitimate? When, if ever, is it an overextension of government such that the government is essentially telling people what to value where its not really the governments place to do so? When is it a justifiable sort of soft paternalism, morally better than a more neutral and hands-off alternative and morally better than explicit laws forcing behaviors? When is it a source of unjust favoritism and opening for corruption? When is it a source of corrective justice?
