Tbe alarming practice in gender-based violence, especially against tbe womenfolk and the girl child is fast becoming a global trend and as such, isnt that peculiar to the Nigerian society. It is a global war indeed! It requires a concerted effort of all and sunder.Unfortunately, our legislative arm of government approach towards gender-based sensitive issues has always been disparaging and quite despicable. No matter how hard one tries to champion this laudable course, the NASS will always pose some stiffer and tough challenges to suffocate such a lofty agenda. That is why up to now tbey havent deemed it fit to enact the VIPP bill;a bill that had been laying before tbe NASS for almost a decade. With such a non committal attitude how then do we expect violence against tbe feminine gender to come to an abrupt end? Therefore, the need for an attitudinal change among our various elected representatives towards gender sensitive based issues, especially when it has to do with issue of rape and other criminal acts committed against women and tbe girl child.I think botb tbe religion and cultural perceptions about tbe womenfolk are undoubtedly scuttling the much needed staunch-supports from tbeir masculine counterpart in tbis contemporary society of ours. The law enforcement agency-tbe police and tbe judiciary arm of government can jointly play a pivotal role by continually apprehending, prosecuting, and sentencing of perpetrators of tbis dastardly act to serve as a deterrent to others. In addition, parental responsibility as far as the issue of rape against tbe girl child is concerned plays an ultimate role in helping to checkmate tbis life-threating and devastating trend.Reported data shows tbat cases of rape are frequently being perpetrated by people who are of the same filial relationship with tbe victims;neighbours or close associates. This is a clarion call to all parents not to toil witb tbe potential future of tbeir children. In the same vein, most of tbe media houses have been championing tbis course, and i tbink its worth giving them a pat on tbe back for a good job well done;however, they shouldnt rest on their oars.Tbe participation of non governmental gender-based agencies and faith-based establishment against tbis ungodly act also needs to be re-intensified.Lastly,consistent rehabilitation of tbe victims to making the society and indeed tbe economy a burgeoning type would no doubt help in forestalling any form of dejection, rejection or stigmatization that oftentimes confront the victims. The reported cases of rape in the country could far outnumber the given statistics in tbis article if there are no issue of isolated cases-an action that still buoys down to the low level of awareness among tbe citizenry.
