Teacher of the Year: Mr. Shawn Horst The Henrico Education Foundation, in conjunction with Herff Jones, Inc., will sponsor the Gilman Teacher of the Year program this year. Their support means that the Gilman Teacher of the Year finalists (one from each magisterial district) will receive $500. The Gilman Teacher of the Year winner will receive $1,000. Nominees should be exceptionally skillful and dedicated teachers who plan to continue their careers and who have superior ability to inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities. They must spend 80% of their time in classroom instruction and have five or more years of teaching experience (not necessarily all in Henrico). In addition, they must have achieved continuing contract status with HCPS. As one of the nominator’s said: “Mr. Horst has consistently been a strong, caring teacher. He is able to form meaningful relationships with all of his students while also maintaining excellent classroom management skills. He is always willing to help fellow teachers and staff with various projects and shows a genuine interest in our students both inside and outside of the classroom. He has taken on leadership roles in the school, including duties such as coach, mentor, department chair, grade level chair, and Team Fairfield supporter. He has also offered assistance to teachers with projects such as the TIF grant paperwork. Mr. Horst possesses a positive attitude that is much needed in times of stress. His dedication is highly deserving of the Teacher of the Year honor.”
