♥ Teacher thanked for rescuing autistic boy The kindness of a stranger possibly saved the life of a ten year old boy with autism. It certainly was not a typical day at the office for a high school teacher. State Police say the boy wandered five miles from his home in Belgrade early Monday morning. Pat Stanton, dean of students at Maranacook Community High School, came across the boy walking in the middle of Wing Mills Road in Mt. Vernon. She pulled over and call 9-1-1. By then the boy was in Messalonskee stream holding onto the bridge. She pulled him out of the water and discovered he had special needs. He walked off and tried to climb into a culvert. Stanton was able to hold onto him and flagged down a motorist for help. The boys mother, Melissa Godin was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The boys parents came to the high school to give Stanton flowers and thanked her for rescuing their son. Stanton is glad she stopped to help and cant imagine what could have happened if she hadnt. People need to stop be more aware of our children and the things that we can do to keep them safe and particularly there are so many more living with autism asperbergers and other disabilities and we all have a responsibility to each and every one of them. Experts say nearly half of all children on the autism spectrum wander away from home or from care givers.
