Teachers: I was out tonight with some friends and ran into a student I had 10-12 years ago and experienced a very rewarding moment. She remembered me by name (i did not recall hers) and said I touched her life because I said 4 words to her...You can do it. She also remembered me for my kind spirit, being positive and having fun with students. She also shared she probably would have dropped out of school if she hadnt had the teachers she had in high school, myself being one of them. The moral of this story is, I had no idea I had impacted this student in any way, no clue. What she remembered was our relationship, not so much about content (she didnt even remember what class I taught). She did remember a ropes course I took the class on, an experience versus a lesson taught. As a teacher, you never may know who, what, how or when you touch another persons life. We get so caught up in content, common core, student growth, interventions, state tests, yada, yada, yada...I feel so fortunate to have this experience tonight, surrounded by my colleagues, as a reminder how important the work we do and the lives we touch is first and foremost created by the relationships we create with our students. Thanks Christi, you made my week, quite possibly my year!
