Teachers Influence on the Classroom By Erin Schreiner, eHow Contributor A teacher can have a major influence on the classroom. The teacher, the captain of the class, can exert tremendous influence over the classroom. This individuals behaviors and attitudes can dictate everything from student success levels to general class atmosphere, making the selection of the perfect teacher highly important. Both teachers and administrators should remain cognizant of the power of teachers and work to ensure that the influence these individuals are exerting is positive. Atmosphere The teacher is almost solely responsible for establishing the classroom environment. Teachers values and ideals determine, to a large degree, how a class will run and what type of atmosphere students will learn in. For example, if a teacher feels that discipline and control are of paramount importance, he can establish an atmosphere of rigidity and structure. Conversely, if a teacher feels that mutual respect and democratic problem-solving are the ideal, he can establish an atmosphere featuring these principles. Organizational Level In many cases a teachers level of organization has a major influence on the overall organizational level within her classroom. If the teacher is neat and tidy, her students may be more likely to follow suit. If, on the other hand, she is not organized, her students may also demonstrate this lack of organization as they have no model to follow. Topics of Study Though states do have mandated academic content standards, in many cases, these standards dictate what must be taught, not how it must be taught. Often, teachers have control over specific topics of study and can choose which specific facts they want to study and how they want to study them. For example, if a teacher is a fan of a particular author, he can heavily infuse this authors texts into his class. Quality of Education The actions and overall effectiveness of a teacher are in large part responsible for determining the overall quality of students education. Teachers who are hands-on, innovative, responsive to student needs and dedicated to teaching commonly produce greater gains, leading students to excel far beyond those taught by teachers who lack these drives.
