Teaching Tolerance educators posted a huge number of comments in response to our social media posts on Michael Brown’s shooting and subsequent events in Ferguson, Missouri. Similarly, when news broke about the deaths of Eric Garner in New York City and Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio, there was an upsurge in searches on tolerance.org for materials related to these issues. Clearly our community is engaged in deep conversations, with each other and with students. Regardless of individual opinions about these deaths or the related grand jury decisions (and readers expressed a wide range of opinions), we got this message loud and clear: Educators want to address freedom of speech, civil unrest, use of force by police and how each of these topics intersects with race—and they are looking for tools to help make it happen.
